Why Is Hiking So Popular?

Since the dawn of time, hiking has allowed people from all walks of life to explore the untouched wonders of nature. America alone, has over 88,000 miles of National Trails where every step you take unveils breathtaking vistas, lush forests, and awe-inspiring sceneries. People in the vicinity of these trails have always been well-aware of how hiking allows them to connect with nature in its purest form. Unfortunately, it took a pandemic to get the rest of the population on board.

Since the Covid-19 pandemic, the outdoor recreational activity space has seen massive growth, with the Outdoor Industry Association reporting that the outdoor recreation participant base expanded by 14.5 million participants over the past three years. During the pandemic people were growing tired of sitting in their houses and needed safe activities to participate in, so hiking, along with other outdoor activities, became great outlets for many Americans. Hiking was one of the biggest draws for people because it’s an activity that needs less equipment than most other outdoor activities, such as camping, biking, fishing, canoeing, and skiing. So, whether the popularity came from people feeling trapped inside their houses or a cheap way to get closer to nature, it is no surprise that hiking ranked just behind running for top outdoor activities by participants in 2021.

The pandemic may have spurred more outdoor recreational participation, but even in 2023, outdoor activities are still seeing an uptick in participants, especially hiking. Currently, hiking is the most popular outdoor activity in America, based on the 2023 Outdoor Participation Trends Report. Americans have just become addicted to the adrenaline of conquering steep peaks, the serenity of trekking through natural landscapes, and the joy of discovering hidden gems in the wilderness. Hiking isn’t seen as just a walk anymore; it’s now seen as an exhilarating journey of adventure and discovery.

Benefits Of Hiking

Every hike holds the promise of new experiences, new perspectives, and new adventures waiting to unfold. That is why hiking provides people with many physical, mental, and social benefits that can enrich their lives.

Physical: Walking is one of the lowest impact sports around, which allows hiking to be very helpful in battling aliments and diseases for people of all ages. One of the leading voices in all things hiking, The American Hiking Society, agrees. Studies and research have shown that physical exercise can help reduce heart disease, high blood pressure, diabetes, obesity, and arthritis. With hiking being such an accessible activity, many more people can participate and reap the rewards.

Mental: Anxiety is becoming more prevalent in people across the country and can be caused by not enough adrenaline being released from the body. Anxiety then can lead to depression down the line if the correct steps are not taken. Walking is a great way to release adrenaline, which means hiking can help release the necessary endorphins that put people in more positive mental states. Spending time outdoors has also been seen to have numerous mental health benefits because of nature’s calming effect.

Social: One of the least talked about benefits of hiking is the social aspect. During the pandemic many people, especially teens & young adults, were secluded from friends and family, which ended up causing a lot of them to lose important social skills. Many people were glued to electronics and in certain facets lost touch with reality. Long walks outside were some of the only safe ways that people could see each other and communicate face to face. Hiking provided, and still provides, the ability to unplug, talk, and enjoy the beauty of a natural landscape.
