Here at Truly Good Foods, it's part of our core values to source the highest quality ingredients so that we can provide our customers with products that will exceed their needs.

In celebration of National Nut Day, read below to learn more about some of the nuts that we carry!

  • Almonds are a stone fruit (or drupe), like peaches, plums and cherries, meaning they have an outer fleshy part with a "stone" in the center. The stone is the seed and is where you'll find the almond! (This is why Almonds pair so well with fruit)
  • Since Almonds are rich in Vitamin E, they have a super long storage life and can be refrigerated for up to 2 years!

  • As you can see in the image above, Cashews actually grow from apples! For a sweet and nutritious snack, you can eat the apple when ripe, but avoid the shell as it's very poisonous being in the same family as poison ivy!
  • The oils from the Cashew shell are used in insecticides and rubber and plastic manufacturing.
  • The US consumes over 90% of the world's Cashew crop!

  • Though Hazelnuts have been around for 5,000+ years,  the first Hazelnut tree wasn't planted in the United States until 1858. Fast forward 20 years to 1878 when a Frenchman planted 50 more trees in Oregon, making them the largest Hazelnut producer in the states!
  • Ancient Greeks believed Hazelnuts could treat coughing and baldness. I'm sure we all know a few people that have proved the baldness claim to be wrong.

Macadamia Nuts

  • Macadamia Nuts were discovered in the rainforests of Australia in 1857, but didn't make it to our side of the world until 1921 when trees were planted on the big island of Hawaii. Those trees didn't bear fruit until 13 years later!
  • Sadly, Macadamias, along with many other nut types, are very poisonous to dogs.
  • Macs also have one of the hardest nut shells in which 300 PSI of pressure is needed just to crack one open!

  • Funny thing about Peanuts is that they're actually not nuts at all! Peanuts are grown in the ground, like beans and peas, making them members of the legume family.
  • It takes approximately 550 peanuts to make just 1 jar of peanut butter! Isn't that nuts?

  • 80% of the worlds Pecan supply comes from the United States! Georgia is the leading state supplying one-third of the Pecans harvested in the US, followed by Texas and New Mexico.
  • In 1995, the Summer Olympics were to be held in Atlanta, GA in 1996. The Atlanta Committee for the Olympic Games used wood from Pecan trees to make the handle of the torches which was carried in relays in Athens, Greece, to the US and all around the world.

  • Iran used to be the sole supplier of Pistachios around the world up until the embargo in the 80's. Now responsible for 46% of the worlds supply of Pistachios is the US, followed by Iran and Turkey.
  • Pistachios are packed with 30 different vitamins!

  • Ever get a bitter taste after eating a Walnut? If so, that's because the Walnut skin contains a nonharmful tannic acid. This can easily be removed by blanching the nut before consumption.
  • Walnuts are the oldest known tree food in the world!
  • California produces nearly one billion pounds of Walnuts annualy. They're responsible for 99% of the US's Walnut supply and two-thirds of the world's!
