World Pistachio Day

This past week was World Pistachio Day and we’re keeping the celebrations going with some of our favorite pistachio products and fun facts.

Did you know?

A one-ounce serving of pistachios equals 49 nuts — more nuts per serving than any other nut! Pistachios also contain more than 10% of the Daily Value for dietary fiber, vitamin B-6, thiamin, phosphorus and copper.

Pistachios have always been on the pricier end of the nut scale, costing three or four times as much as other nuts.

Remember getting that red dye all over your fingers back in the day when pistachios were dyed? Hard to imagine now, but companies dyed them red to hide flaws on the shell and to make them stand out in vending machines.

Pistachios ripen in late summer or early fall, growing so rapidly that the kernel splits the shell. These trees are wind pollinated which means one male tree can produce enough pollen for 25 nut-bearing female trees. Female trees produce their first pistachios at age five and can bear fruit for up to 200 years.
