Tiger Nuts

Little-known tiger nuts could be the next big superfood. They have actually been around for ages, with pieces discovered inside Egyptian pharaohs’ tombs. Tiger nuts are creamy, with a naturally sweet coconut flavor. Keep in mind though that the nuts need to be soaked in water overnight to become edible. Once soaked, they can be eaten as a snack, ground into flour, or pressed to make a plant-based milk.

Why So Super?  Tiger nuts have a great nutritional profile, with 6 grams of protein and 2 grams of fiber for a quarter-cup serving.

Watermelon Seeds

A new seed has emerged in popularity and health benefits. Watermelon seeds are gaining traction as a great snack option that rivals sunflower and pumpkin seeds. Drying and flavoring them naturally is the most common process, but they can also also be found with some bold flavors. They’re perfect to sprinkle over your breakfast for a nutritional boost or eat roasted as a snack.

Why So Super? Watermelon seeds are a great source of monounsaturated and polyunsaturated fats, protein, vitamin B, and magnesium.

Maca

This root grown in the mountains of Peru has a sweet, earthy taste that’s perfect to blend into smoothies. It’s also used as an ingredient in some natural foods to boost their benefits.

Why So Super? Maca contains a wealth of nutrients, including plant sterols which can help lower cholesterol. It’s also been known to be helpful in reducing stress and boosting libido.

Pitaya

Also known as dragon fruit, this colorful cactus has a similar taste to kiwi. You can enjoy it as a snack on its own or add frozen pitaya to your smoothies.

Goji Berries

They’re still worth the hype. Goji berries are always an easy add to your yogurt, oats or smoothie.

Why So Super? One ounce of goji berries is loaded with vitamin A and C.

Sumac

Sumac is one of the most under-the-radar superfoods. Mostly found in Middle Eastern cuisine, this spice has a huge antioxidant measurement. Even the overrated kale can’t beat it. Consider sprinkling the spice, which has a salty, lemon taste, on salads, rice or pasta.

Why So Super?  Antioxidants are one of the biggest health benefits of sumac spice. They’re a great addition to an anti-inflammatory diet,  which can ward off illnesses like coronary heart disease.

Sorghum

An ancient grain originally from Africa, sorghum is a great wheat alternative. But unlike wheat, sorghum is gluten-free and allergies to it are rare. It’s a great vegan source of protein.

Why So Super? On per calorie basis, it has protein content that’s comparable to quinoa. Like most grains, it’s vitamin and mineral rich and its antioxidant score is through the charts.

Maca

Native to Peru, maca root has a long history as a superfood, it’s been said that Incan warriors used it before going into battle. Maca is a great superfood to add to your smoothies if you’re looking for a caffeine-free boost of energy.

Why So Super? Three of the biggest health benefits maca offers are increased energy, increased sex drive, and hormone balancing.

Moringa

Moringa is definitely one of the biggest new superfoods you’ll be hearing about in 2018. It’s a tropical leaf that’s ground into a powder and its taste is nut-like, with a kick similar to that of radish. It’s a great alternative to kale, green tea, and matcha.

Why So Super?  It’s anti-aging and anti-inflammatory, and it’s packed with all nine essential amino acids, powerful antioxidants, and a ton of iron, calcium, protein, and vitamin C.
