National Almond Day

Today is National Almond Day! Besides being one of the crunchiest nuts too munch on, just one serving of almonds contains the highest amount of protein of any tree nut, and they are filled with fiber, calcium, vitamin E, riboflavin, and niacin, as well as being an excellent source of magnesium. So in honor of one of our favorite nuts here at Truly Good Foods, here are some interesting fun facts about them the honoree of the day:

1. It takes more than 1.2 million bee hives to pollinate California’s Almond crop (over 550,000 acres).
2. Since the outer hulls aren’t consumed by humans, they are instead used as part of cattle feed so no part of the almond goes to waste.
3. There are actually 30 different varieties of almonds, yet only about 10 varieties usually undergo production. The Nonpareil variety is the one we are most commonly familiar within the U.S., and the one you’ll find in most stores nationwide.
4. The world’s largest almond factory is in Sacramento, California. It processes 2 million pounds of almonds a day.
5. It takes 1000 pounds of almonds to make 1 pint of almond oil.
6. There are 5,639 people in the U.S. listed on whitepages.com with the last name ‘Almond’
7. The immature green almond can be preserved and pickled — some consider it a delicacy
8. All commercially sold almonds from the US are pasteurized to prevent salmonella and other bacteria growth.
9. Almonds help build strong bones and teeth. The phosphorus in almonds helps make this possible.
10. The earliest varieties of almonds were found in China carried by traders down the ancient silk road to Greece, Turkey, and the Middle East.
