Flavor Trend Spotlight: Banana

July 11, 2019

Bananas are produced in more than 100 countries. And although they’re already naturally packaged for a convenient grab-and-go snack, bananas are becoming a very popular ingredient in packaged snacks.

Bananas add flavor, texture and nutritional value to snacks.

High in potassium, banana chips are an excellent energy snack, particularly after being active. They contain vitamins B6 and C with a healthy dose of dietary fiber.  Bananas also have antibiotic properties to help fight off infections and viruses. Bananas have even been seen to be useful in the treatment of goiters, which are enlargements of the thyroid gland.

Using bananas as an ingredient in snacks is also an opportunity to reduce food waste. Up to 40% of bananas don’t make it beyond the farm because they aren’t the right size or color. Using the fruit as an ingredient cuts this loss greatly.

As consumers are looking for alternatives to dairy and gluten, expect to see banana milk and banana flour gain traction in the coming years. It’s a great plant-based option for those with allergens.
