Balanced Snacking

February 1, 2017

While everybody knows that healthy eating and snacking are necessary ingredients to a healthier lifestyle, it’s not always easy. Only enjoying healthy snacks 100% of the time can be overwhelming and without proper planning can make you fall off the wagon and find yourself face deep in chocolate and sugar. At Truly Good Foods, we promote a balanced snacking lifestyle. The goal should be 80% healthy snacking with 20% left for indulgent snacks you love and keep you from feeling deprived.  To be successful with a healthier lifestyle, it’s important to know the reasons it’s truly beneficial and then plan ahead so you won’t always be reaching for that candy bar when you hit your 3pm crash.

By nature, humans are hunters/gatherers.

We are designed to eat all day. Spreading your food intake throughout the day keeps blood sugar levels balanced and actually helps your body burn more calories. This is the reason snacking is so important. It takes energy for your body to process food so snacking let’s you burn more calories by spreading your food out throughout the day. Also, eating healthier items between meals will let you have better control over your hunger during big meals leading to less caloric intake for the day.

All your meals, including your snacks, should have a balance of macronutrients.

Macronutrients are energy-providing chemical substances consumed in large quantities that include carbohydrates, proteins and fats. A healthy balance of these macronutrients is: 30% protein, 15%-20% fat and 50%-55% carbohydrates. To keep your snacking in line with this breakdown, snacks like trail mixes and energy bars are always a good choice.

Even on days you cheat a little with your snacking, try to stick to an eating schedule.

Eat a nutritious breakfast. Eat your first snack around 10:00 a.m. Eat lunch between noon and 1:00 p.m. Eat snack number two around 2:30 or 3:00 p.m. and dinner no later than 6:00 p.m. Need an evening snack? Always try to stick with a healthy one.

Life is about balance and snacking should be no different.

Some of our healthier snack options to choose from include ReCharge, Garden Chips and our new trEAT4u line launching soon. We also have plenty of better-for-you snack mix options. When you’re feeling a craving for something more indulgent, our Buffalo Nuts, Grabeez and Dip & Devour lines are always a good choice.
