We are deep into a no sugar added/low-sugar trend. With the increase of low-sugar diets like keto, paleo and Whole30, consumers are being steered away from sugar and becoming more informed of the health benefits gained from cutting sugar out of your diet. In a recent Reuters survey, nearly 60% of people surveyed reported limiting their sugar intake recently.
New FDA labeling goes into effect this year which will impact packaging on all snacks. The updated label will call out “added sugars” on the label, making it easier for consumers to identify sugar beyond the naturally occurring kind. Just because consumers are avoiding sugar though, doesn’t mean they don’t want something sweet. Monkfruit and honey are natural sweeteners that are seeing growth as ingredients.
The ‘war on sugar’ has made manufacturers consider alternate snacks that are lower in sugar and highlight other health benefits.
